Fujifilm Congratulates Five New Recipients of the Fujifilm Fellowship at Harvard Medical School

CAMBRIDGE, Mass – FUJIFILM Holdings America Corporation (Fujifilm), announced that five new recipients have been awarded the Fujifilm Fellowship at Harvard Medical School (HMS). Since its launch in 2019, the program has provided 11 fellowships for Ph.D. students who are enrolled at HMS, and focused on translational medicine, the process of applying basic research in the laboratory for new therapeutic development.

Recipients of the Fujifilm Fellowship represent the school’s most promising Ph.D. students. The newest Fujifilm Fellows include:

Andrew Dates – Andrew is in his third year of graduate studies in the Harvard Chemical Biology Ph.D. Program. He is a member of the Blacklow Lab at Harvard Medical School where they study a number of unresolved questions about how other proteins genetically implicated in the Notch pathway modulate signaling in normal and cancer contexts.

Laurent Dubois – Laurent is in his second year of graduate studies in the Harvard Ph.D. Program in Biological and Biomedical Sciences. He received his master’s degree from the University of Basel, and completing his thesis in the lab of Thomas Bernhardt, Ph.D. in the Department of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School with the general goal of understanding the mechanisms that regulate cell division and cell wall remodeling in E. coli.

Chimwemwe Mwase – Chimwemwe is in her third year of graduate studies in the Harvard Ph.D. Program in Biological Sciences in Public Health. She is a member of the Park Lab at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health where they study lung pathogenesis including Asthma. Chimwemwe’s work has focused thus far on the roles of factor-positive extracellular vesicles that are released from well-differentiated human bronchial epithelial cells.

Ajinkya Patil – Ajinkya is in his second year of graduate studies in the Harvard Ph.D. Program in Virology. He is a member of the Kadoch Lab at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard where they are developing novel strategies to target a broad range of human cancers.

Stephanie Yiu – Stephanie is in her second year of graduate studies in the Harvard Ph.D. Program in Virology. She is a member of the Gewurz Lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where they study the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) host-pathogen relationship. Stephanie started pursuing proteomic analyses of EBV host-pathogen.
“We are proud to expand our support to these additional Fujifilm Fellowship recipients. The Fujifilm Fellowship program closely aligns with Fujifilm’s mission of collaboration to foster and accelerate significant breakthroughs in life sciences,” said Yutaka Yamaguchi, chairman and chief executive officer of FUJIFILM  Irvine Scientific Inc., and general manager of the Fujifilm Life Science Strategic Business Office.

The Fujifilm Fellows participate in programmatic activities within the new Ideation Hub (I-Hub) at HMS, an initiative that aims to build community and catalyze ideation in therapeutics science, help faculty and students assemble interdisciplinary teams to pursue translational projects and provide early-stage support.

“This fellowship program is one of several initiatives between Harvard Medical School and Fujifilm centered in the Life Sciences. The Fellowships are a touchstone for Fujifilm, as we continue to expand current and build new strategic partnerships and collaborations across Harvard’s Health and Life Science divisions and institutes,” said Bruce E. Novich, Sc.D. division president, FUJIFILM Holdings America Corporation.

During the upcoming 2020 HMS I-Hub and HMS Translator Symposium on Wednesday, October 28, two of the newly selected Fujifilm Fellows, Chimwemwe Mwase and Ajinkya Patil, will present lightning talks on emerging techniques, the future of medicine, and the direction of the translational research industry. For more information about the virtual symposium, please visit the website or RSVP to the Zoom registration page
